Hon. Nkeiruka Onyejiocha: Putting Good Governance Above Party Politics

In a rare display of political maturity and commitment to good governance, Hon. Nkeiruka Onyejiocha, a stalwart of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has thrown her weight behind the second-term bid of Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, of the Labour Party (LP). This move underscores the idea that leadership should transcend party lines when the goal is the development and progress of the people.

Hon. Onyejiocha, a former Deputy Chief Whip of the House of Representatives and a four-time federal lawmaker, currently serves as Nigeria Minister of State for Labour and Employment. Despite her strong ties to the ruling APC, she has publicly commended Governor Otti outstanding performance in office, joining other well-meaning opposition leaders in recognizing his efforts to transform Abia State.

Her endorsement of Otti reflects a growing consensus that leadership should be based on competence, not party affiliation. Since taking office, Governor Otti has focused on infrastructural development, economic revival, and governance reforms efforts that have earned him bipartisan praise. This trend signals a shift in Abia political landscape, where good governance is becoming a unifier, bridging ideological differences for the sake of progress.

Interestingly, while endorsing Otti for a second term, Onyejiocha also seized the moment to woo the governor into supporting the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027. This move highlights the complex nature of Nigerian politics, where alliances can be fluid, and mutual interests often shape strategic political decisions.

The significance of Onyejiocha endorsement cannot be overlooked. It sends a strong message that the people of Abia deserve continuity in effective governance, regardless of party differences. It also challenges other politicians to prioritize the welfare of their constituents over partisan loyalty.

As the 2027 elections draw closer, this development raises important questions: Will more opposition figures rally behind Otti? Will cross-party endorsements redefine Abia’s political future? One thing is certain ”when leaders put the people first, politics becomes a tool for progress rather than division.
