On the 2nd of January 2025, Abiriba, fondly called “Small London,” witnessed a momentous occasion as Dr. Uche Ogah, former Minister of Mines and Steel Development, philanthropist, and the CEO of Master Energy, visited the community for the traditional wedding of the daughter of his close friend, Chief Obasi Uba.
Chief Uba, a respected industrialist and son of Abiriba in Abia State, hosted the colorful event that highlighted the richness of Igbo culture and traditions.

The celebration was a vibrant showcase of Igbo heritage, with guests adorned in resplendent traditional attire, music filling the air, and cultural displays that reflected the pride and identity of the people. Dr. Ogah, a staunch advocate of preserving and promoting Igbo customs, expressed profound appreciation for the Abiriba community’s commitment to maintaining their traditions.
During a heartfelt discussion with Onyeani Kalu “The Grandmaster” at the event, Dr. Ogah emphasized the significance of performing traditional marriages in Ala-Igbo, the Igbo homeland. Both leaders noted with concern the growing trend of hosting such ceremonies outside Igboland, often due to fear or societal pressures created by insecurity in the Southeast. Dr. Ogah passionately urged the people not to succumb to fear or allow external factors to erode the cultural fabric of the Igbo people.

“The essence of our culture lies in our ability to preserve and pass it on to the next generation,” Dr. Ogah remarked. “Traditional weddings are not just ceremonies; they are a reflection of who we are as Ndi Igbo. I commend Chief Obasi Uba for his dedication to upholding this sacred aspect of our identity.”
Chief Obasi Uba, in turn, was lauded for his exemplary role as a custodian of Abiriba and Igbo traditions. His daughters’ wedding became a rallying point for unity, pride, and the celebration of shared values. The occasion also underscored the enduring spirit of Abiriba as a beacon of cultural preservation and community cohesion.

The Grandmaster, speaking from the heart of Abiriba, reiterated the importance of cultural pride and resilience. “As Igbo people, we must rise above challenges and hold onto our traditions, for they are the backbone of our identity. Events like this remind us of the strength in unity and the beauty of our heritage.”
Dr. Ogah’s visit to Abiriba was more than a celebration; it was a call to action for Ndi Igbo to cherish and protect their cultural heritage in the face of modern pressures. His presence and message resonated deeply with all attendees, leaving an indelible mark on the community.

Abiriba once again lived up to its name as the “Small London,” offering an unforgettable experience steeped in elegance, tradition, and communal pride. As the celebration concluded, the echoes of shared laughter, music, and cultural appreciation reaffirmed the enduring legacy of the Igbo people.
