The OUK Family and the Growing Concern Over Political Monopoly, Selfishness and Greed in Abia North

What we are witnessing in Abia North Senatorial District under the leadership of Distinguished Senator Orji Uzor Kalu is no longer ordinary political succession. Many now see it as the systematic conversion of public office into a family estate, an emerging political dynasty centred on one household.
_Consider the facts:_
• Senator Orji Uzor Kalu served as Governor of Abia State for two terms (8 years).
• He is the current Senator representing Abia North.
• There are strong indications that he intends to seek re-election to the same Senate seat in 2027.
• His younger brother, Mascot Uzor Kalu, has declared his intention to contest the 2027 Abia governorship election.
• Another brother, Nnanna Uzor Kalu, currently serves as a Commissioner in the National Assembly Service Commission.
• Most recently, his daughter, Neya Uzor Kalu (listed as “Ogbonnaya Kalu” on the official nomination document), has been nominated for appointment as a non-career ambassador.
One family. Multiple strategic positions. One senatorial district and one state as the primary theatre of operation.
This pattern raises legitimate and troubling questions that every citizen of goodwill should ask:
1. Are there no other qualified, competent, and patriotic sons and daughters in *Igbere, Bende LGA, Abia North, Abia State or indeed the entire South-East* worthy of such high appointments?
2. Must every major political or diplomatic opportunity in the zone trace back to a single bloodline?
3. Is public service now a family inheritance rather than a call to serve the broader society?
These are not attacks, they are questions born out of genuine concern for fairness, equity, and the future of representative democracy in Igboland.
Furthermore, the decision to submit the daughter’s name as “ Ogbonnaya Kalu on the official nomination list, rather than her widely known name, Neya Uzor Kalu, has fuelled suspicion that there was an attempt to downplay the obvious family connection. Transparency in such matters is not optional; it is the minimum the Nigerian people deserve.
Equally worrying is the observable shift in Senator Kalu’s public statements on the matter of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and the broader Igbo question . Many recall his earlier passionate appeals for the release of the IPOB leader and for political solutions to the agitation in the South-East. Yet in more recent times, his tone has changed markedly, culminating in the controversial claim on TV that 30,000 Igbo lives were lost under IPOB’s watch.
While every public figure is entitled to evolve in his or her thinking, the timing and sharpness of this shift have led credible analysts to wonder whether it is connected, directly or indirectly, to securing favourable consideration for the ambassadorial nomination in Abuja.
If personal or family political interests are now influencing positions on such sensitive regional matters, then we have crossed a dangerous line.
To the loyal members of the APC in Abia State who have laboured for years, campaigning, mobilising, and sacrificing without reward, watching positions of influence handed to individuals with little or no record of party service is deeply demoralising. ( i pity you all and can only Console you all ) Merit, loyalty, and broad representation must never be sacrificed on the altar of family aggrandisement*.
Finally, rumours of a political understanding between Senator Kalu and His Excellency, Governor Alex Otti , that could affect the outcome of Abia North Senatorial Election seat in 2027, are circulating widely, where it is agreed that for Otti to retain his office in 2027 he must first use his office to make sure that OUK return to the senate, If such an arrangement exists it will be firmly rejected by the people. The electorate in Abia North will not trade their future for any backroom deal.
A Call to All Stakeholders
1. The National Assembly, in exercising its constitutional duty of screening and confirmation, should subject the nomination of Ms Neya Uzor Kalu to the highest level of scrutiny, focusing on her qualifications, track record of public service, and the broader principles of federal character and equity.
2. Our leaders, present and aspiring, must remember that power is held in trust for the people, not for the enrichment or perpetual domination of one family.
3. The good people of Abia North are peaceful, patient, and respectful, but they are not asleep. In 2027, they will speak with their votes, and their message will be clear: public office is for service, not for inheritance.
History is watching.
Abia North is watching.
Abia State is watching.
Nigeria is watching.
May God heal our land and grant our leaders the wisdom to place the people above personal or family ambition.
