The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his “courageous and decisive” removal of fuel subsidy, describing it as a turning point for Nigeria’s economic stability.
Speaking at the 2025 Innovate Africa Conference in Abuja on Thursday, Wike said Tinubu’s bold move, though initially unpopular, has begun yielding positive results across all levels of government.
“You may not be right, but you must take a decision and that’s what this present government is doing,” Wike said.
“When Mr. President removed the fuel subsidy, many people cried out that the masses would suffer. But look at where we are today things are stabilising.”
The former Rivers State Governor revealed that due to the reforms, the federal, state, and local governments now share over ₦2 trillion monthly from the federation account a sharp increase from previous allocations.
“We used to share around ₦500 billion. I’ve never received more than ₦10–15 billion monthly as governor,” Wike stated. “But today, not less than ₦2 trillion is shared every month all because of the removal of fuel subsidy.”
Wike commended Tinubu for taking a decision that many leaders “would have been too afraid to make,” adding that the economic foundation of the country is now stronger as a result.
